County sets new zoning referendum

County commissioners on Tuesday agreed to set a second zoning referendum for a district around Foley and Summerdale and endorsed an incorporation vote in Perdido Beach.

Commissioners used legislative authority for the first time in 2007 to schedule a Planning District 18 zoning election without requiring that a petition first be submitted. The measure was defeated 160-151.

County commissioners clashed last week when asked to do it again. The differences continued Tuesday, but the proposal passed 3-1 with Commissioner Ed Bishop providing the deciding vote.

Big O’s receives low health score after surprise inspection

Last week, Big O’s Grill in Gulf Shores was in “big trouble” with the food police. Usually considered a high achiever, Big O’s earned a failing health rating of 78. Baldwin County Health inspector’s July 1st report shows violations including excessive drain flies, a faulty walk-in cooler, plus an unlabeled spray bottled in the kitchen later identified as bug spray.

An unexpected visit at the Stop n Shop in Summerdale also turned up a few dirty dining secrets. Inspector’s July 2nd report shows employees had to throw out a ton of food, including sandwich meats and cheese after their walk-in cooler stopped working properly. Stop N Shop serves up our second lowest score, 83. Remember a score of 85 or higher is needed to pass the healthy kitchen test.

China Dragon Chinese Restaurant in Gulf Shores wraps up our list of low achievers with a below average rating of 84.

Officers may not have been able to catch the black Toyota pickup truck full of palms then, but they have it now. Donovan now faces a laundry list of charges including theft, attempting to elude as well as attempted assault for trying to run down a police officer as he sped away.

Dangerous High Speed Chase in Summerdale

“Mamma, a tornado came through, the roof blowed off and my car’s got holes.”
