Fairhope donations on hold

The City Council on Monday passed a moratorium on community contributions — money the city routinely gives to organizations and projects that rely on donations — that will remain in effect until the next fiscal year’s budget is drawn up.

Shortly after passing that moratorium, the council unanimously approved a donation of $7,500 to Honor Flight South Alabama, part of a national program that takes World War II veterans on day trips to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Barry Booth, a Spanish Fort dentist who is a leader of the local organization, made a presentation to the council Monday asking for the donation. He said the organization’s first flight had been a success, sending 92 vets to the memorial, and he is now in the process of raising the $55,000 necessary to fund its second flight
