City seeks grant for fire station

The City Council voted Monday to apply for a $562,500 federal grant to build a fire station neighboring the newly opened Publix Super Market at Par ker Road off U.S. 98. The fire station would be built on land donated to the city by Arthur Corte, the developer of the property that includes the upscale supermarket.

Volunteer firefighters said they need a fire station on the north side of town to better serve the Rock Creek subdivision and other area neighborhoods. The city’s application for the Federal Emergency Management Agency grant, however, wasn’t welcomed by all.

Before the vote, the council heard complaints from Paul Ripp, a resident of High Ridge Road just off Parker Road. Ripp said that, since the Publix at the Shoppes at Fairhope Village opened last month, Parker Road residents have been subjected to the constant noise of the shopping center’s rooftop air conditioners
