Daphne Council left with bill for nymph

Without any public announcement, the frustrated leaders of a decade-long effort to revitalize the city’s downtown gave up on their struggle two months ago, leaving the City Council with a $13,100 bill.

The council voted Monday to pay that invoice, the remaining fee owed to local artist Fran Neumann, who designed the bronze statue of the nymph Daphne installed nearly one year ago at the center of an outdoor fountain fronting the newly renovated City Hall.

Council members complained about having to pick up the tab for the statue — the Downtown Redevelopment Authority had pledged four years ago to foot the entire bill

That’s just great. We can’t get our roads paved but they have money to pay for some other group’s bill. Just add this to the rest of the money that’s been wasted on the mayor’s fancy new office building.

If I had a nickle for every time I got stuck with the bill for someone else’s nymph, I’d have enough money to buy my own useless statue.
