Baldwin officials discuss school funding options

Equity funding may not seem fair for Baldwin County schools, but don’t count on major changes in time to make up for current shortages, a former state financial director told local officials today.

Members of the Baldwin County Board of Education, County Commission and legislative delegation met at the county’s Central Annex to discuss funding for local schools. The Board of Education approved a resolution in July asking the County Commission to pass a two-year, 1-cent sales tax to provide money to avoid more layoffs and cuts at public schools.

In the coming fiscal year, state officials are expected to withhold about $45.4 million, which is more than the local property tax income, officials said.
