The Planning Commission denied a proposal to build the first mobile home park in this city since its incorporation.
The request failed after the Planning Commission voted 4-4 to approve Sinking Ship LLC’s proposal to use six acres at the end of Spanish Brook Drive for a 21-unit mobile home park. The request required a majority vote to move forward.
Opponents of the park said they feel the city is already flooded with rental housing and they don’t believe a mobile home is the best use of the property

What a horrible name for a corporation who wants to build a trailer park.
It’s better than their second choice: Blown Away, LLC
This is truly upsetting to Ole Tom… Aside from the poorly chosen LLC, trailer parks are a vital asset to communities going through housing issues. Baldwin has a large glut of mid to high range homes, and the subdivisions that were starter subdivisions in years past have become middle income swanky towns where a modest home will still cost more than $150,000 (these same homes cost $30,000 when they were originally built)
Trailers are an affordable step toward home ownership, and unless all levels of government realize this, we’re going to have a tough time of pulling out of our current financial problems.
Ole Tom predicts Baldwin County will still be rebuilding atleast a year after the national economy rebounds… It’ll take quite a bit to see housing starts move forward with such a surplus of turn key housing. No new subdivisions either, why would local banks lend to developers when the banks themselves own several unfinished or vacant ones? We’re going to be working on this for some time I’m afraid.
Now I need a beer.
