Child Hit And Killed By Truck In Baldwin County

A four year old child was struck and killed around 7:00 p.m. this evening (03/09/09) on US 98 near County Road 27 in the Barnwell community of Baldwin County.

The child, William Austin Wood, of Foley, was apparently playing near the edge of the road and had walked into the roadway to retrieve an errant skateboard. A westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by John Michael Burnette, 41, of Fairhope, was unable to stop before striking the child. The child was transported to Thomas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to have contributed to the incident and no charges have been filed. The incident occurred at or very near sunset.
