Baldwin County teacher charged with harassment

A Baldwin County teacher was charged with harassment Monday after a parent contended that the woman grabbed the buttock of one of her female students, according to law enforcement and school officials.

South Baldwin School for Technology cosmetology teacher Verna Joy Bennett, 49, of Mobile turned herself in to Robertsdale police Monday morning and was released on a $500 bail, said Sgt. Rex Bishop.

“It appears it is not a sexual matter, but the charge is one of harassment,” said Terry Wilhite, a spokesman for the Baldwin County Public School System. The complaint states that Bennett subjected the student “to unwanted physical contact by grabbing the buttock of the victim while at school” with the alleged intent to “harass, annoy or alarm.”
