Two Daphne educators say teachers union made them to contribute to Obama campaign

Two Daphne Middle School educators allege in a complaint filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission that their teachers union illegally funneled funds to a political action committee, and ultimately forced them to contribute to President-elect Barack Obama’s campaign, according to the document.

Daphne Middle School Assistant Principal Jeanne Fox and eighth-grade science teacher Claire Waites allege in their complaint that after they were elected to serve as local delegates to the July National Education Association convention in Washington, they were forced to make a donation to the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education.

When the women arrived at the convention, Saadia Hunter, then-president of the Baldwin County Education Association, told them a donation had been made to the NEA Fund for Children and Public Education in their names using travel money that was to have been given to the women by the county teachers union, according to the complaint.

While Hunter initially said the money was going to “a children’s fund,” she later confirmed it was actually going to a political action committee that supported Obama’s campaign, according to Waites’ affidavit.

Waites’ affidavit said she encountered a similar situation when she attended the 2004 convention and was told that the required donations to the political fund were “not negotiable.”

This will be interesting to see play out. Were all the state teachers asleep at the wheel when AEA donated $250,000 to Paul Christopher’s campaign? He ran as a republican but was mighty liberal for a southern conservative…
