Fairhope mayor’s boat buy surprises council

The week before Christmas, City Treasurer Nancy Wilson received a puzzling bill: $7,500 to purchase a 40-foot boat from the state’s surplus property division.

Two weeks later, she and City Council members said they were just starting to learn how Fairhope came to possess a retired Navy boat worth an estimated $20,000. And just in time — the city has until Monday to decide whether to pay the bill for the boat or give it back to the state of Alabama.

Mayor Tim Kant said he made the procurement arrangements, and by the time the bill arrived in Wilson’s office, the gray, 15-year-old former personnel transport boat had already been delivered to waterfront city property beside the Fairhope Yacht Club.
