A reader writes in with questions about the Loxley Work Release program:
I would like to know why the Loxley Work Release program allows their convicts to roam free, doing God knows what, God knows where? They’re out here having babies and all kind of stuff. Mostly, I would like to know why the officers bring them to town and let them pile into the Dollar General like a bunch of hoodlums. They fill up the dollar store, subway, tobacco store, and the parking lot.
And these images were submitted:
The images were taken from a distance (probably for safety reasons) but you can see a group of people standing around and that is clearly the white work release bus nearby.
What do you know about this situation? Is this even an issue?

Chuck, the majority of the men on Work release are considered safe enough to be out. I know several people that contract this kind of work, infact I believe you may even recieve a tax break for their employment. I can’t say I agree with some of the places they are left to “wander” but if you think about it I see them cleaning the road side in silverhill quite often, possibly the same in loxley.
This would put them at the dollar general as a staging location or possibly the meeting point. As I said these guys aren’t considered flight risks, the two I spoke with (yes I did speak with them) were rather close to release and were doing work release to help knock off some of their remaining time. I didn’t confirm any of this with the warden and the guard didn’t seem to know either.
In other words, if you feel threatened, keep your distance. Otherwise, realize they are people that made mistakes and at the very least are helping pay that debt to society through hard labor.
I don’t feel threatened by them. I just don’t understand why they are allowed to roam free when they are prisoners. Do you know that there are convicted murderers in the camp. I knew 2 of them (murderers)when I worked at the Chevron (6 or 7 years ago). They were not supposed to be in the camp but they had “friends” and “slipped” through… after all, who would know about it. The inmates get tax breaks and the money they earn goes to pay fines, etc and every week they get what they call “draw”. This is their play money that they use to participate in the real worl with the rest of us. The point is, they are prisoners and they should act and be treated like prisoners. Also, as prisoners, guards should know where they are at all times. They are called trustees and are trusted to got to work and return to the camp as scheduled. Obviously, they can’t be trusted or they would be sneaking away from their jobs to do the things that they are doing. Everyone has an opinion about this but unless you have dealt with them first hand (like I did for many years), you can’t really answer this question honestly. I was “friends” with a hundred (literally) of those guys and I know first hand what they do and get away with. I guess the ones that really know, aren’t going to tell anyway.
ok look.. i work at a place where we employ work release from loxley.. and i have gotten to know these guys really well.. i love them all, they are fun to be around and great to talk to.. they are just people.. and they work really hard to make up for what they did. and they dont roam free either.. they have guards and they are under watch very carefully.. these men are wonderful individuals. and you shouldn’t condem them for wanting to buy a clean toothbrush.. or some body wash.. or even jackets and clothes to sleep in because the camp is extremely cold.. i feel for these guys.. and you would too if you just got the chance to know them.. like i said.. i work with them.. and they can be trusted.. they have to earn points to go to the store… if you haven’t talked with them like i have then keep your opinions to yourselves… i love the guys i work with… they are insightful and kind… and they aren’t bad people.. most of them are working to change and are truely sorry for their past.. so just get to know them
oh and btw.. the whole distance for safty reasons thing.. is crap.. they wouldn’t hurt you… stop watching too much tv… its not like they all carry weaponds and plan to kill or hurt anyone who walks past them… they aren’t in the center for murder or anything… trust me i know… and it isn’t an issue….
Nobody said they were scared of them! Maybe you should be at the store while they are there. If you haven’t been there then you don’t know what they’re doing. I have, I’ve known most of these guys for years. And I have been involved first hand with this facility and these “officers”….. you see the side of these people that they want you to see. And they most certainly do roam free. Anyway, it’s not worth arguing about. FYI: You have no right what-so-ever telling anyone to keep their opinions to themselves. You see what you see and I see what I see…. I can’t make you believe any different and you can’t make me believe any different. I used to date a guy WHILE HE WAS IN THERE so believe me, I KNOW what they can and cannot get away with. Happy Holidays!
Upon moving to Silverhill I have to admit, I thought it was GREAT that they had “prisoners” doing their “dirty work”. But after I began meeting these work release guys, I realized that they are not just prisoners. One of them has to be the nicest guy I have EVER MET! He was just being a kid (a long time ago) had a couple of drinks and drove three blocks home. He was trying to make it home to his new baby and beautiful wife. SOMEONE ELSE ran a red light and he T-boned that car. Because he had a cooler in the back of his truck, he was guilty. Of course, he probably shouldn’t have been driving, but most of us have done this when we were younger. After 14 years, he was on the work release in Silverhill and worked his tail off. WHAT A GENTLEMAN. He is out now and back with his wife and grown child. I was lucky to met him and become friends. Most of these men are just like my friend, who made a mistake & was giving a 2nd chance.
THIS WORLD IS CRAZY…I HAVE VISITED THE LOXLEY WORK RELEASE CENTER TWICE AND I TALK TO THE MEN IN THE CHAPEL..THEY AREN’T HARD STONE COLD KILLERS, THEY JUST MADE A MISTAKE IN LIFE…WE ALL MAKE THEM BUT SOME OF US GET CAUGHT AND SOME OF US DONT. THE ONE YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT IS THE ONES IN THE STREETS THEY ARE THE ONES WHO GOT IT BAD NOW DUE TO THE ECONOMY CRISIS…THEY ARE THE ONES WHO WILL ROB AND STEAL AND KILL!
I LOVE MY IMATE
Everyone is entitled to voice there opinion, and for me i think that non-violent offenders do Deserve a second chance and for anyone that is that afraid to be in the area of the Dollar General or Family Dollar where they are frequently on a daily basis and thinks that bad of them then maybe you should chose another place to shop, or stay in and shop online, they work hard at to earn a second chance and they obviously got it.It is what it is!
(You) would want a second chance so why not give them one.Luv u Wayne unconditionally since da first day!
As for the safety and locations it may make the elderly feel uncomfortable If the inmates are standing within range of the entrance of the stores and is it possible that the inmates can be dropped off at a local Career Center so it is easier for them to get employment etc. etc. There may be fast food resturants nearby that will hire those that deserve a second chance.
All of us have our opinions of course. I feel no threat. As a matter of fact I am extremely close to one that is serving time now. He is a very well brought up man who had everything going for him in high school. He was genuinely a great kid, but fell into the wrong crowd. This crowd led him to making mistakes that he is now being punished for. We all know what it’s like as teenagers to fall under peer pressure. Some of these men fall into that category. These aren’t terrible people they are just peole who made mistakes that were punished. There are some criminals roaming around free unpunished who are more dangerous than most of these men. They work hard labor for their crimes and they well deserve it, but pose as no threat to society. If the government thought this would harm innocent citizens, I guarentee you they would not have allowed this program to start.
Well now that I have read the rest of the comments, I feel more comfortable saying my fiance’ is in there. He is the one who was just mixed with the wrong crowd. I know him like nobody else does. It hurts my heart to know that I can’t wake up to him in the mornings. We write every day almost and I’m just counting down the days. I know my baby deserves a second chance. I believe in being entitled to your own opinion, but please make sure you don’t generalize these guys under one negative perspective. I love my inmate and I plan to marry him and start a family as soon as we can get back on our feet when he gets out. So please do not tell someone they can’t form an opinion until they “really” know them because nobody knows my fiance’ like I do.
I love my inmate (unconditionally) we all make mistakes but we live and we learn from them and but we have to be strong for them and by all means beware of those haters/so-called friends why don’t we keep people out of our business cause that is when they began to hate especially those that don’t have a life as for me and my inmate i moved to a different neighborhood a change of scenory always helps and we are both on the same page we make desicions together we realize what mistake it was that that created the problem and we create a solution to the problem, and we don’t entertain Haters when they make negative comments we will have a social life but we will be around positive people so when those bad habits(THE WRONG CROWD)try to come around my inmate will already be aware of mistakes he has made and that he won’t be going back down that road again(jail) he will be able to tell them without me reminding him NAW i don’t live that life no more. But we also have to be strong for our inmates although it is tough cause of missing that person but we will have to be extremely strong cause after being incarcerated for so long it does have an effect on a person mentally. So just remember let us be their SOLID ROCK!
My father is in Loxley Work Release and he is not a bad person & he is not a killer… So you should not judge them just b/c where they’re at… People change all the time. And the ones leaving these rude comments prolly have inmates in your family… Maybe yall should be in there…… This is my opinion about this website… I am a daughter of a inmate there an he is a really good person!!!! P.S. they come to my job in R’Dale every week after church and they have good manners and are nice to all our workers…..
Cocaine’s a helluva drug.
Work Release is not a bad place, it teaches the inmates how to work and behave. They are good and deserve better than people leaving rude comments. I usta work at McDonalds in Fairhope Al. and some of them usta work there. They were respectful, nice, and cool as hell. Exspecially Jerome McGivery, Chuck, Joey, Fernando, Michael Baker. I dont know the rest of their last names. Chuck is 40 something, he was kinda like a brother to me, Joey is 31, he is sweet and respectful. I hope the best for each and every one of them. Happy Holidays and hope yall get out soon and do yalls BEST. Love U Chuck…
These people arent as bad as people think. I’ve met a good share of them, and they are sweet individuals who have a 2nd chance in society. All of the inmates are kept under watch, even at their jobs at restaurants or wherever. The Correctional Officers keep tabs on them, so it’s not like they get to go wander out in the world without supervision. And as for the Dollar General comment, they generally have two COs there watching them.
It was fun while it lasted im free now
well i’m not here to judge anyone cause God created us all, i have a brother in loxley work release and by all means i love him with all my heart and he fell into the wrong path in life with the wrong crowd and growin up with him was loved.so these guys do have a heart just as we does. mistakes are here to be made and of course we all make them so im just gonna leave it as this as long as your on face of this earth your gonna make them so don’t judge the book by it’s cover, open it and read what’s inside cause the life you save is gonna be your owns……………
So sad sometimes. no matter how hard the guys try. They too feel threatened. hey , know as hard as they work at work release programs– when they are released people still want to criticize thier past and keep them from having a future. There are some companies and individuals who realize a second chance for some one down and out will produce a better employee than arrogant entitled people who get a good job and then try to avoid working and cheat the company. My best wishes to the people who are decent enough to realize they are human and most of them DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE> THERE ARE ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS! We have to live our lives treating everybody with decency and inspiring them to want to accomplish good things.
i love my inmate!!!!
i have a brother there amd by God i love this boy to DEATH he is a good child raise well he just got in the wrong crowd now he is paying for his wrong doing i am glad he is there it will teach him a lesson to get out and work for what you and and not do other thing to get moneu the qick and easy way and thanks all for you in sight because i was a little concern about him being there
Melissa apparently there are personal reasons why you think ALL prisoners that are doing time should not be able to roam “free”. How would you know that someone was out “making babies?” Before you go and put every man into the same category ask yourself if YOU have every broke the law. And if so, if you were attempting to redeem yourself, if you would want someone online making you look bad when possibly all you want to do is move on with your life. Its unfair for everyone to suffer because of someone else’s mistakes. Yes these men travel together and in an obvious fashion. But that also contradicts what you stated about them “roaming free” Im sure the ADOC knows what they are doing. It sounds to me like you have a personal issue with some of these men. But don’t take it out on people you don’t even know.
I have stood in line at Dollar General beside these guys. The only thing weird was there were 3 registers open and long lines at each. It felt like Christmas Eve 5 min before closing except it was March. I said hello to them like I would any one else and never felt uncomfortable. I too like some of you have had the pleasure of meeting one young man. I can’t think of him without tears welling up for one mistake made as a teen. I hope everyone will here his story soon.
i have to say my dad has been to prison and i was engaged to a man named above that was a inmate he is a good person and my dad is awesome people make mistakes grow up and realize NOBODY is PERFECT i just went to trial a week ago and got sentenced for a crime that i did not commit but because it happened in my house im guilty and i guarantee you im not a bad person or a killer all i do is work but if you heard the hole story and didnt know me i guess u would critize me too huh
Im dating a loxley inmate and I know my man is a good person he had custody of his son who he’s been raising since birth. Everybody makes mistake some get caught some dnt. I cant say im threated by the inmates lockd up because im more threated by the dudes that hangout n my neighborhood. Give them a chance a Murderer could be your next door neighbor who jus hasnt got caught. Jus because they are inmates dnt always mean they are bad people alot of good people are lockd up. I love my inmate and Im thankful and truly blessd he’s where he’s at and closer to coming home to his family!
My husband was just transfered to loxley and I Pray that He is able to hold his head up while he is there. That he will continue to become the son, brother, uncle, father and husband that God is molding him into being.
That nothing that the evil one sends his way will sway him from his relationship with the Lord. Ive had to do my time in the freeworld have had to face the people we disapointed everyday. So i know for a fact that there are alot of haters like the other melissa and many will always feel that way.
Thats fine with me cause my man who is in heaven has forgiven me and His plans got us through these trials and tribulation in order to make us stronger. Remember that we are all human and if you would spend sometime in the word with the only one that matters I promise you next time you see the brothers you will only feel blessed and realize that you are witnessing what our heavenly father’s grace can do.
