Sometimes, no room at The Haven

In a small facility by the city’s Public Works building, volunteers with the no-kill animal shelter, The Haven, share the same roof with the city’s animal control officer. But the city and the nonprofit do not share the same purpose or the same practices when it comes to homeless animals, officials with both agencies said.

“Some people think that we’re one and the same, but that’s not at all the case,” said Michael Graham, director of The Haven.

Confusion between the two entities since The Haven moved into the city-owned facility in 2001 has created more than a few heated comments from would-be pet donors, especially in the summer months when stray dogs and cats seem to propagate in neighborhoods like fleas in a rug, Graham said. This year is no different, he said.
