Baldwin schools expand pre-K programs

Delta Elementary is one of five Baldwin County schools slated to add a pre-kindergarten class when school resumes Aug. 11.

Adding pre-kindergarten at five schools — Delta, Magnolia, Robertsdale, Elberta and Silverhill elementary — will increase Baldwin County’s total to 16 pre-K classes on 15 campuses, said Baldwin Schools’ Federal Programs Director Cindy Chandler. Foley Elementary has two pre-K classes.

Many low-income parents want their children to attend day care or preschool, Chandler said, but that’s often impossible when the average cost of day care is $460 per month.

Baldwin schools expand pre-K programs

What happened to the school budget cuts? There’s no money for buses to get kids to school. There’s no money for regular classroom teachers and there’s not enough space for anyone without portables.

But they’ve managed to take just enough of our money to pay for daycare for 4 year olds from low-income families in the public schools and private organizations. Thanks for the $20 increase in spending there, Governor Riley.

Anyone know what programs or classes are being cut in exchange for this low-income day care?

I believe the article said grant funded, what part of grnat funded do you not understand. If the Baldwin County School System wanted more $$$ for buses and teachers and programs maybe they should do away with the positions of the TWO women (high Paid Administrators) who do little of nothing on a daily basis, are not supervised, and spend most of there time either running the roads or flying the friendly skies! so let’s start with them first! Well, I hear one of them does hollinger’s awards for him. Now ain’t that special!! By the way, maybe you need Pre-K!

Sweet as lemons you are…. Federal Grants are typically matched with somewhere around 20% of local funds… An aweful lot like what we currently have between the state and local system. It is interesteing that we do not have enough local funds for teachers salaries but we do have enough for a pre-k system.

I believe this is what chuck was driving at.

The federal funds recived by school systems (all over the state) DO NOT REQUIRE a federal match. Sorry, Chuck hasn’t done his homework on grants! We still say get rid of the worthless employees!

Please explain the difference between “FUNDS” and “GRANTS”. Grants typically require a match… just going by your nominclature.

What must it be like to be eaten up with jealously. Seems like “Do Your Homework Mr. Baldwin Report” wants to spend “its” time running the roads and flying the friendly skies instead of “its” job of helping the kids. Isn’t this better than sound off!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now responses are not hand picked by family members.

Nope not jealous at all. However, are you a taxpaer in BAldwin County? As a teacher I find it criminal that hollinger is allowing some HIGH PAID employees to do as they please, no accountability. Wouldn’t you rather see you tax dolars spent ON CLASSROOMS than Delta Airlines?? These employees make in excess of 80,000 a year, one makes 90,000!! So, aren’t you happy some folks draw huge paychekcs and do noting!! Do you wonder why the morale in the school system STINKS!!

First of all, as a teacher you probably would not have a clue of what goes on at levels higher than your pay grade. Which leads one to conclude that you probably do not teach now but are working with these high paid employees and see them doing things you wish you could do. Otherwise you would not have twisted the story to fit the message you are sending.

#8 Anger Management on 07.01.08 at 7:16 pm

Hollinger needs to consider anger management for his staff. When will these attitudes spill over into the workplace and schools?

From the article:

“Baldwin officials learned earlier this month that five grants had been won from the state Office of School Readiness to fund five established pre-kindergarten classes.

The school system then took federal money used to fund those programs and diverted it to launch pre-K at five new schools. ”

So these grants freed up money that was being used to fund established pre-K programs. But instead of using the “freed up” money to prevent teacher cuts, program cuts, reduce portables, etc. the decision was made to expand the pre-K program instead. Instead of funding other programs, the state decided to fund “grants” for pre-K.

Where do you think federal and state grant money comes from? Where does all government money come from? Tax payers, of course. That is very nice of the government to “grant” the money it collects from us to fund daycare for “low income parents.”

There are two other issues here that should also be pointed out:

1. Why do so many parents want to turn their children over to government schools as soon as possible? Cradle to the grave, more and more people expect government “grants” to pay for them and their kids.

2. Why is the federal government involved in the education system at all? The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

#10 Response to salary on 07.01.08 at 7:43 pm

Hi Know-it-All… salary scehules are public information posted on the board web site. Take it to bank all teachers know what salaries are.. and since one of these individuals works on our campus, take it we know what she makes!! You must be a LOYAL hollinger supporter, just think its yout tax $$$$being taken from a calssroom.

#11 Tom the Beer Man on 07.02.08 at 6:49 am

Only way for you to know what another makes–if its not included on the published salary pay scale– is for you to look at their check. So by extension someone in an accounting or secretarial position is releasing this information.

That or someone is going out of their way to use the freedom of information act. If you’re that interested in what someone makes, ask them.

Chuck, meet you at McSherry’s?

#12 Go Tell Hollinger on 07.02.08 at 11:34 am

In response to #3 Response to the Beer Man, I suggest you go tell Hollinger of your concerns (man to man or woman to man as the case may be) so he can have one worthless individual identified and go ahead and start the process to fire you.

At least Hollinger has someone on staff to write his awards. Look on the BOE web site at page 44 of 93 from the June Regular Board Meeting minutes for the action item that recommends a $10,750 contract for an individual. Then look at page 26 of the July 11 Back to School section where that contractor presents an award to the individual that submits the papework for the contract. Is this using using tax payer money to buy awards? I think the BOE needs to look into all contracts from this Division and see how many awards these people have bought with our tax $$$$$$$$.

Look up the Dr. He is Dean of Education at Missiouri State University. What is he doing passing out awards? What organization gave the award? Article was silent on that. The article left a lot out which leads readers to make a lot of incorrect assumptions. Something smells fishy here.
