Developers want tax breaks for state’s movie industry

Economic developers in Alabama are disappointed about failing to get legislation passed that would have provided incentives for the state’s motion picture industry.

Members of the legislative committee of the Economic Development Association of Alabama on Monday told members gathered here for its annual summer conference that the measure will be re-introduced next year. It could even happen sooner if Gov. Bob Riley includes it in a possible special session for Volkswagen incentives.

The state Senate passed the bill, which would have provided up to $10 million in incentives for the film industry. But the House Education Appropriation Committee deemed it unconstitutional and a subsequent debate was not completed before this year’s session ran out.
