Jellyfish Invasion hits Gulf Coast

This time of year, marine officials like Chris Benson say jellyfish are plentiful… and potent. “They follow the currents,” he says, “but they are blooming right now. It is pretty bad because of all the weather related factors”

This year’s drier weather and saltier conditions bring the spineless stingers closer to shore. All you have to do is dip a net in to catch a batch of them. “We caught about ten of them last night right off the dock there,” Phoebe says.

We were in panama city beach also. Jellyfish were everywhere, even in the lagoon at St. Andrew’s. I have been going to PCB for 35 years and have never seen this. Why?

According to the article it’s the drought… not enough fresh water to drive em back.

Chuck did you hear who got the shroud award this year… 14.9% alcohol in beer… now that’s what I”m talking about.

We are in Gulf shores and we have noticed small “jelly like” substances on shore. Totally clear. We have had some small stings, but not anything that prevented us from getting into the ocean. The seaweed was not even bad. We have never seen this small of a jelly fish. We are not even sure that was what we were seeing. Just wondering if anyone else has seen similar findings. July 11,2008

Was in Gulf Shores from 7/14 – 7/18 and the Jelly Fish were horrible. We were able to get in the water only one day. First time I have been to the beach when NO ONE would dare get in. Those kids that did, would soon be seen running out screaming. Yes, I saw the clear jelly things on the beach. I assumed it was the guts from the waves smashing them open. /shrug

Same thing happened to us in Gulf Shores. While fishing in fresh water bay side at night we found some bioilluminesce organisms that we thought were jelly fish also…

I have been going to Panama City Beach, FL for several years. Yes, last year in 2008 was bad for jellyfish and seaweed, no doubt. The weather was terrible for the southeastern U.S. all summer! We are about to go down there in a few days and I have heard nothing but good things this year, due to better weather and such. I’m stoked!!

In Gulf Shores today, jellyfish were covering the beach after the tide went out. Rather aggravating trying to avoid them while walking…
