Baldwin County Schools: No more layoffs expected

School officials in Mobile and Baldwin counties said Tuesday they did not expect further layoffs stemming from the Legislature’s failure to pass an education budget Monday.

Statewide, however, there could be up to 9,000 layoffs of teachers who have no tenure protection, beginning as soon as this week. State law requires districts to notify such teachers of pending layoffs by the last day of the school year, which comes Thursday.

Baldwin County’s school system, expecting a cut of $13 million, is prepared to reduce its locally funded teacher units — positions supported by local sales and property taxes, rather than state revenues — by about 110.
