If your loved one dies in Baldwin County and the death is not attended by a physician, chances are their body will wind up at a three car garage, inside one of two coolers that sit in a corner.
It’s a small space the county leases from a local funeral home for about $1,000 a month. Such is the life of Baldwin County’s Coroner Jim Small. Perhaps one of the most under funded coroners in the state of Alabama, Small must store his bodies in a private location because the county does not have a morgue. “It is extremely difficult to arrange the coroner business around the private business that goes on in that funeral home,” says Small.
