The outbreak has been linked to Eastern Shore Baptist Church’s 10th annual “Beast Feast,” an outreach event at which people bring covered dishes and wild game is served, said Ken Wilson, associate pastor of the Daphne church. (location)
About 300 people attended the Feb. 16 dinner that included a variety of wild game including turkey, deer and elk, along with standard pork butts and other items, Wilson said.
Out of approximately 150 people interviewed by the health department as of Monday morning, 20 said they were ill, Porter said. Eight cultures have tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, a strain of the bacteria that can cause severe illness, Porter said.
