Bob Wills opposes Fairhope school projects

Board of Education member Bob Wills objected to an updated school construction plan at Thursday’s meeting, saying changes were not properly discussed and approved by the seven-member panel.

At issue are two Fairhope projects — an $18.2 million renovation of the current Fairhope Middle School on Section Street and $11.7 million renovation of the current Fairhope Elementary School on North Bishop Road — and the board’s intention to create K-6 elementary schools whenever possible.

“They’re trying to bring something in the back door that they didn’t bring in the front door,” Wills said.

Wills also alleged the Fairhope projects were selected to help Callahan’s re-election bid.

After the meeting, Wills said the school board is being “micromanaged” by four board members most loyal to Hollinger — Callahan, Moore, Long and Trione. Wills has long been Hollinger’s most vocal critic on the board.
