Robertsdale teen honored as lifesaver

Riding home Monday afternoon, Elsanor School first-grader Chad Hostnick, 7, began choking on a piece of butterscotch candy. Sitting nearby, Robertsdale High School freshman Michael Patterson called on the first-aid training he received as part of the Navy Junior ROTC program earlier this fall and began administering the Heimlich Maneuver.

Patterson eventually dislodged the candy from Hostick’s throat, which the 7-year-old parents’ said saved the youngster’s life.
