Work to resurface the Foley Beach Express should begin in the next month and could be completed before traffic picks up for the summer tourist season following the acceptance of a $1.6 million bid for the project.
Council members voted unanimously to accept the bid of Mobile Asphalt to resurface the 7-year-old highway. In July, city officials had estimated that renovate work on the the 8.5-mile stretch of highway would cost $2.2 million.
City Engineer Wendell “Butch” Stokes said the contract should be complete in less than four weeks, then work would begin. Mayor John Koniar said the timetable should allow the project to be done before the height of tourist traffic to the Gulf.
