Landon Sykora had already scored 34 on the ACT, an achievement sure to impress college recruiters.
So the Daphne High School senior had no plans to retake the ACT — one of two major, standardized tests for college admission — until a few words of encouragement from English teacher Andre LaPalme.
In the October go-round, Sykora made a 36 on the ACT, the highest possible score, a feat accomplished by only a relative handful of students every year. On average, just one in 4,000 test-takers records a 36, according to national ACT statistics.
